Driver dies after tractor-trailer overturns on Turnpike near Hard Rock Stadium

Trauma surgeon, about 100 Miami-Dade firefighters respond to scene

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A tractor-trailer driver died Tuesday after the semi overturned on an offramp from the northbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike in northwest Miami-Dade.

The crash was reported near Northwest 199th Street, close to Hard Rock Stadium.

About 100 Miami-Dade firefighters responded to the scene.

Technical rescue teams, air rescue and a trauma surgeon were on standby, but the driver, who was trapped in the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This was a very difficult call from the very beginning because of the location," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Kirsten Miller said.

Authorities said the semi-truck was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alvaro Feola said all northbound lanes were shut down for several hours just south of Miramar Parkway after the crash. The lane have since reopened.

Detectives are now investigating the cause of the crash.

The victim was described as a 54-year-old man from Miami. His identity has not been released.
