2 men injured in hit-and-run boat crash near Haulover Beach

Operator of other boat taken into custody, police say

HAULOVER BEACH, Fla. – Two men were injured Friday in a hit-and-run boat crash about 4 miles off the coast of Haulover Beach, authorities said.

Miami-Dade police said the boat suspected of fleeing the crash was spotted by another agency, which followed it to Haulover.

A total of five people, including a child, were on the boat that was struck. Police said two of the passengers fell overboard, one of whom suffered a cut to the leg.

The two crash victims were taken to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center.

Police said the operator of the other boat was taken into custody after coming into Haulover Inlet.

"He came in the inlet, so we think he got scared and maybe ran around and didn't come in right away after he hit the boat," Indian Creek Police Officer Jeremy Martinez said. "But he ended up realizing his boat had a hole in it or something when he hit the other boat, and was sinking, so he had to come in to Haulover. So now they have him over behind Beer Can Island."

Several agencies are investigating the incident, including the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
