2 horses die after colliding while training at Hallandale Beach racetrack

2 practice riders hurt in incident

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Two horses were euthanized and their practice riders were hurt early Saturday after the animals collided while training at Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino, authorities said.

A spokesperson for Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue said the collision happened just before 5:45 a.m. at the racetrack in the 900 block of South Federal Highway.

David Joseph, a spokesman for Gulfstream, said one of the horses ran off with a female rider and struck a second horse and practice rider. The racetrack is holding the Florida Sire Stakes Saturday. The incident will not affect the races.

Paramedics transported both rider to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. The female rider suffered a fractured jaw while the other rider was treated and released.
