Car wraps around tree during crash on Turnpike near Quail Roost Drive

Driver seriously injured in crash

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A car wrapped around a palm tree Wednesday afternoon during a crash on Florida's Turnpike in southwest Miami-Dade.

The driver appeared to have lost control of the car and crashed off the side of the northbound lanes just south of the Quail Roost Drive exit.

Sky 10 was above the scene at 2:30 p.m. as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews worked to remove the driver from the car.

Authorities said it took more than an hour for crews to remove the driver as he was pinned against the tree.

"The car was on an embankment, so we did have to deal with a slope. We did have to deal with a lot of stabilization issues, as far as the vehicle not falling any further and not tipping over," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Maggie Castro said. "So, we did have some of those types of issues to deal with, along with it being wrapped around the tree."

Trauma surgeons were at the scene on standby in case they had to perform any emergency amputation, but luckily, they were not needed.

The driver was eventually transported to Jackson South Medical Center.

No other details were immediately released.
