MIRAMAR, Fla. – A money courier was shot during a robbery outside a Miramar restaurant Wednesday night, police said.
The shooting occurred in the parking lot of The Licking on Miramar Parkway.
Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said the victim, identified as Taurean Lewis Burney, 37, was walking back to his car after collecting cash from the business when someone in another car got out, approached him and demanded the money.
Rues said the victim handed over the cash but was shot anyway. He was airlifted to an area hospital. His condition wasn't immediately known.
"I will tell you this. There was not a significant amount of money, and it's quite unfortunate that someone would rob someone who turned over the cash," Rues said. "He turned over the money, and yet he was shot multiple times."
Rues said the gunman fled the scene in a maroon car. A gray Dodge pickup truck was towed from the scene.
The Licking is a South Florida restaurant chain with locations in Miramar, Sunrise, North Miami, Miami Beach and Miami Gardens. It gained notoriety in 2015 after it was co-founded by Miami's DJ Khaled.
"Quite frankly, it doesn't matter who the owner is," Rues said. "This was, you know, a serious crime of an armed robbery shooting. So it doesn't matter who owns the restaurant to us. We're going to work the investigation the same."
Anyone with further information about the robbery is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
