1 man airlifted to hospital after drive-by shooting in Miami Gardens

Gunman wearing gray hooded sweatshirt, driving U-Haul van, police say

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – One man was shot Sunday in Miami Gardens, police said.

Officer Carlos Austin, a spokesman for the Miami Gardens Police Department, said a drive-by shooting happened about 4:30 p.m. at Northwest 37th Avenue and Northwest 191st Street, near Barbara Hawkins Elementary School.

Police said the 20-year-old victim was walking east on Northwest 191st Street when the gunman drove by in a U-Haul van and opened fire. He was identified as Jahni Smith.

"He's funny. He's perfect to get along with," aunt Princess Johnson told Local 10 News. "He has no enemies."

Paramedics airlifted the man to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Police said the gunman was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.

"You know who you are and you know what you did, and we're going to get you," Johnson said.
