Driver escapes unharmed after tree falls on top of SUV in Miami

Grandparents, toddler lucky to be alive

MIAMI – A large tree fell on top of a white Nissan SUV while two grandparents and their 4-year-old grandson were inside Thursday afternoon in Miami.

Irma Martinez was driving and her husband, Ramon Martinez, was in the front passenger seat.

"I thought it was just a tree branch," Martinez said in Spanish.

Carlos Paredes and other residents in the area of Northwest 31st Street and Northwest 18th Avenue thought they were dead, but they rushed to help.

Paredes said they all thought the family was very lucky.

"I hope this family goes to church everyday and plays the lotto," neighbor Luis Paredes said in Spanish.

Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll agreed. He said the little boy was very fortunate.

"The rooftop came just inches away from the child that was in the car seat in the back," Caroll said.

Witnesses believe the wind was to blame for the tree fall.
