MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ A woman driving in her car was struck by a stray bullet Wednesday in northwest Miami-Dade County, authorities said.

Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade County Police Department, said the shooting happened around 4 p.m.Ā in the 3100 block of Northwest 52nd Street near Lorah Park Elementary School.

Family members identified the victim as 52-year-old Terry Farrell.Ā

"She sawĀ guys with big guns shooting.Ā Thatā€™s all she told me, thatā€™s all she remembers," said Greg Anderson, Farrell's son. "She couldā€™ve been gone right now, just driving by."

A photo taken at the scene showed Farrell'sĀ silver Chevrolet with a shattered passenger-side window.

Another man was shot in the leg nearby around the same time, leading police to believe that man may have been the intended target.

The shooting put Lorah Park Elementary School on lockdown. Students at the school were instructed to shelter in place for about 30 minutes.

"I was scared. We just hiding in the hard corners," said fourth-grader Danahria Gray.Ā

Paramedics transported Farrell to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.Ā She underwent surgery late Wednesday, her son said.

"Her skin is hanging and blood is in her face.Ā Sheā€™s in a lot of pain right now," Anderson said.
