MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A police pursuit that started in Sweetwater and continued onto the Dolphin Expressway came to an end Monday morning near Miami International Airport.
The suspect driving a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck was eventually surrounded by state troopers on the Dolphin Expressway near Northwest 87th Avenue.
Sweetwater police said the suspect fled during an attempted traffic stop.
At one point during the chase, an officer was nearly injured.
"This individual that was driving the vehicle drove in the same direction as where our officer was standing, forcing the officer to get out of the way," Officer Jonathan Arche said.
The chase eventually ended on the Dolphin Expressway. A view from Sky 10 showed the suspect sitting on the ground near a concrete barricade.
Arche said police tried to pull over the driver because of an alert from a license plate reader on a traffic light in the city.
"The LPR system can send out a hit for various reasons, whether it's a warrant for a homicide, whether it's a battery case in which the vehicle was involved," Arche said. "It could be a stolen vehicle. It can be a traffic infraction."
Arche said no officers were injured.
The suspect's identity hasn't been released.
