FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Delray Beach man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a motorcyclist who was stopped at a red light in Fort Lauderdale.
Fort Lauderdale police Detective Tracy Figone said Harrison DaCosta, 29, faces a charge of second-degree murder.
Figone said DaCosta fatally shot another man Thursday night as he was stopped on his motorcycle at a red light at the intersection of Powerline Road and Cypress Creek Road.
She said DaCosta fled in his 2000 Honda Civic after the shooting but was soon found in Oakland Park.
The 41-year-old victim hasn't been identified, pending notification of family members.
Figone said investigators haven't determined if the shooting was an act of road rage or what the verbal dispute was about before the shooting.
DaCosta appeared in court Friday, at which time his attorney asked the judge to grant his client pre-trial release, noting his connection to the community and relatives who live in the area.
Prosecutors said they opposed because even though DaCosta is claiming self-defense, several witnesses said they saw him pin the motorcycle against the curb and shoot the victim.
One witness, Tracy Davis, told Local 10 News that he heard the victim speaking with the suspect moments before he was shot.
"The words were, 'Go ahead and do it.' He said it twice to him, and that was it. Then he shot him four times," Davis said.
Prosecutors said the defendant claimed the victim tried to hit him with a rock, but authorities found no rocks or hard objects nearby.
"I was just shocked that it happened so quickly and that he shot him four times," Davis said.
DaCosta was ultimately ordered held without bond.
