1 dead, 2 injured in MacArthur Causeway crash

2-car crash closes westbound lanes of causeway for hours

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A fatal crash closed the westbound lanes of the MacArthur Causeway for several hours Thursday morning in Miami Beach.

All lanes reopened shortly before 11:45 a.m.

The two-car crash occurred in the westbound lanes near Fountain Street.

"We've been able to piece together the initial portion of this investigation with the help of surveillance video," Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said.

Police said the driver of a Toyota Camry was stopped at a light when the driver of a Ford Mustang crashed into it from behind.

Miami Beach police said three people were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where one of them -- a passenger in the Camry -- was pronounced dead.

The westbound lanes of the causeway, which connects Miami to Miami Beach, were closed hours after the wreck so that investigators could recreate the crash scene.

It's unclear whether the driver of the Mustang will be charged.
