Bicyclist fatally struck by vehicle in Fort Lauderdale

Cyclist veered into path of SUV, driver says

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A bicyclist was fatally struck by an SUV Monday afternoon in Fort Lauderdale.

The incident was reported on West Broward Boulevard near Northwest 14th Avenue, right across the street from a Fort Lauderdale police station and just outside a day care.

According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan, the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the small white SUV told Local 10 News reporter Christian De La Rosa that the cyclist was on the sidewalk when he suddenly veered into his lane.

"When I see I'm going to hit him, I pull the break," the driver said.

Officials said all westbound lanes of West Broward Boulevard were shut down from the 1100 block to the 1500 block after the crash.

De La Rosa said he spoke with several people who heard the crash, but none of them saw what happened.

Anyone with further information about the crash is asked to call the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
