Victim found Friday morning on Northwest Ninth Street

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Deputies are investigating a shooting near Fort Lauderdale that left one man dead.

The victim, later identified as Channing Howard was found in the 2700 block of Northwest Ninth Street shortly before 12:30 a.m. Friday.

A woman who spoke to Local 10 News said a man knocked on her door asking for help. She went outside to find her neighbor, suffering from a gunshot wound, taking his last breath.

"I felt so bad when I seen him laying down there," she said. "You know, I actually cried."

Crime scene technicians took pictures of the victim's bloody shirt.

Eric Howard said the 38-year-old victim was his cousin.

"He was a good man, you know what I mean?" Howard said. "He didn't have to die the way he died, you know what I mean?"

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are trying to determine who killed him and why.

"Detectives and crime scene technicians spent the night searching for evidence," BSO spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said.
