911 calls released after 3 boys injured in fireworks accident

Victims are 8, 9, 11, authorities say

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. ā€“ Authorities released 911 calls Tuesday after three boys were injured over the weekend in a fireworks accident in Pompano Beach.

"Someone just blew their face off with a firecracker and we need an ambulance," a boy told the dispatcher.

The boy identified himself as a friend of one of the victims and said that the child was crying and bleeding heavily.

"His face is like busted open and bleeding really bad," the boy said.

Pompano Beach spokeswoman Sandra King said firefighters were called at about 7 p.m. Sunday after the boys were injured in a neighborhood near the intersection of Northwest 27th Avenue and Ninth Court, near McNair Park.

Witnesses said the boys tried to set off a firework when something went wrong.

"I heard like a loud boom," Marcus Stirling, who lives in the area, said. "I heard a lot of people yelling and screaming. We came up the corner and just heard the kids."

King said the victims are 8, 9 and 11.

She said one of the children lost his hand, another lost fingers and the third suffered burns to his face and chest.

"Just sit down, sit down," a woman, who also called 911, could be heard telling the boys.

King said two of the boys are brothers.

Paramedics took the victims by ambulance to Broward Health Medical Center. It's unclear whether any of them have been released from the hospital.Ā
