Ann Scott visits St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School in Coral Gables

Local 10's Laurie Jennings interviews Florida's first lady

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – As Florida Governor Rick Scott aims for a second term, his wife Ann has traveled with him on all but two trade missions.

This week, the pair travelled to South Florida, where Scott spent his 15th "Let's Go To Work Day" at Yoga Foods.

Meanwhile, his wife visited St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School in Coral Gables, which is celebrating 60 years of education. As part of the school's big celebration, school officials invited the first lady for a question and answer session with 5th graders.

Scott told the inquisitive crowd that her role as the governor's wife is to support her husband and act as a goodwill ambassador.

Local 10's Laurie Jennings was also there and had a chance to sit down with Scott.

The mother of two grown daughters and now the proud grandmother of a 14-month old boy, with yet another grandchild on the way, told Jennings that she has found her calling in helping Florida's foster children. She also said she's working closely with state agencies.

"When Rick took office, there were 850 foster children living without an identified family. Now there are 750," said Scott.

When Jennings asked her to share the one thing she would change in Florida if she could, Scott immediately spoke about jobs. She said she would give every Floridian a job so that they could support their families. With that said, the first lady also said she thinks there are more jobs on the horizon.

"Trade missions…. South Florida is the best opportunity," she told Jennings.

Both the governor and the first lady will be in South Florida until Saturday. The following week, Ann Scott will travel across the state for the fifth annual Literacy Week. She will kick off another "Million Minute Marathon," a reading challenge for all grades statewide.
