Boy struck by SUV in Deerfield Beach

Fight breaks out between driver, boy's family members

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. ā€“ A childĀ was struck by a sport utility vehicle just before 5 p.m. Sunday in Deerfield Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Ā "The girl, she was there on the ground, holding her baby," witness Anthony Clay told Local 10 News after the boy was struck outside 347 NW Fourth Place.

Witnesses in the area said the driver didn't immediately stop.

"She hit the child, and she continued to roll down the street, slowly," Clay said.

The distance between where the boy was struck and the SUV came to a stop stretched about a block.

Clay said the boy's family members chased down the SUV.

"By that time, they caught her at the stop sign and they pulled her out (of) the vehicle and they beat her unmercifully," Clay said.

A woman's slipper could be seen on the street next to the SUV, along with a piece of clothing.

Deputies said the boy was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
