Slater said officers attempted a traffic stop, but the Nissan Altima sped away and headed south on Interstate 95.

Officers pursued the car as it exited on Congress Avenue in Boca Raton and then got back on I-95.

The car exited again on Glades Road and continued to Airport Road, where someone in the car threw a gun out of the window.

Slater said the driver, identified as Morris Johnson Jr., lost control of the car and crashed near the Cinemark movie theater shortly before 10 p.m.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Johnson told police that he fled because he didn't have a driver's license and was scared for his life.

Police said a passenger in his car, identified as Diamond Neely, told officers that she met Johnson on Instagram. She said Johnson picked her up at her home in West Palm Beach, but when he asked her to throw the gun out of the window, she refused, so he rolled down the windows, removed the magazine from the gun and tossed it out.

Johnson was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding, grand theft auto, possession of marijuana and driving without a license.
