80-year-old woman, dog killed in Davie hit-and-run crash

Neighbor taken to area hospital

DAVIE, Fla. – An 80-year-old woman and her dog were killed in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night in Davie, according to police.

Another woman was also injured and taken to an area hospital.

The crash was reported about 7 p.m. in a community off Southwest 18th Street and Southwest 86th Avenue.

Neighbors said the impact sounded like something fell out of the sky, and that speeding has been a problem in the community.

"I think it's terrible," Roger Hache said.

Evidence markers lined the street Wednesday night as a body was covered by a tarp and a mailbox was destroyed.

Neighbors said the victim acted heroically.

"Two women checking their mail, a neighbor was pushed out of the way and the woman who was getting the mail was killed," George Law said.

Police confirm a woman who lived on the block died, along with her dog. Her neighbor was taken to a hospital.

The neighbor's niece, Kimberly McCall, said her aunt, Vickie McCall, was chatting with the victim, Emma Kelsoe, when a car veered into them.

"My aunt's eyesight isn't that well," McCall said. "The woman yelled, 'Car!' Next thing she knows, she sees headlights. She just feels the wind knocked out of her."

Kelsoe's granddaughter, said her grandmother is being credited for saving Vickie's life.

"We were told by the neighbor after she got back from the hospital that she actually pushed her out of the way. My grandmother saved her life," the woman, who did not want to be identified, said.

Residents said speeding is a problem in the 55-and-older community, which is filled with people who have vision or hearing impairments.

"Police come here pretty often," Hache said.

Sgt. Pablo Castaneda verified the speeding problem.

"We have had speeding complaints in this park and our department has addressed those complaints," Castaneda said. "Our traffic unit is out here on a regular basis."

Now the hunt is on for this driver responsible.

"We rely on the community heavily to provide us with the information that allows us to find this person," Castaneda said.

Police are searching for a black or blue car in connection with the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
