HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A family is grieving after their loved one was fatally shot last week during an apparent road rage incident off the Palmetto Expressway.
Relatives said Jason Giles, 31, grew up in Hollywood and graduated from MacArthur High School.
They said he went on to serve in the Navy and most recently was working as a truck driver.
Police said he was driving a tractor-trailer Friday morning when he was shot and killed.
Ron Giles told Local 10 News on Tuesday that he is still trying to make sense of the news that his son was killed.
"He was a very loving, calm person and this is all very baffling for me to think that he got out of a truck and pulled a knife on somebody," Ron Giles said.
Miami-Dade police investigators said Jason Giles and a man who was driving a Nissan Altima got into an argument at the Northwest 25th Street exit ramp in the southbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway.
Authorities said Jason Giles pulled out a knife and the other driver, Felix Valdes Jr., 33, pulled out a gun and shot the truck driver.
"His grandma was speaking to him as the whole incident was happening, and he said there was a guy in an Altima that kept on brake checking him and brake checking him, and she told him just to take it easy, and he said, 'I'm going to have to let you go,' and that's the last anyone heard of him," Jason Giles' sister, Vanessa Giles, said.
Jason Giles' father said not knowing what really happened is making the heartbreak worse as he prepares to lay his son to rest.
"I just want some answers. How does my son get shot and killed and it's already pre-determined (that) it's self-defense, and it's like, where's the gun? The gun goes missing?" Ron Giles said.
Valdes has not been charged and Miami-Dade police said the investigation is ongoing.
Jason Giles' family is asking for anyone who saw anything that morning to call police.
