Deputy Jenna Moeller was called to a trailer park on Stock Island just before 1 a.m. When she arrived, she found a 38-year-old woman bleeding from her head.

The woman told Moeller that a man had knocked on her door and rushed inside when she opened it. She said the man, who was later identified as Perez, grabbed a hammer from the top of her refrigerator and hit her in the back of the head with it.

She said he punched her several times while yelling, "I'm going to kill you."

Perez got away after the attack, but he left his cellphone behind, sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Deputies found Perez sleeping in a shack where the woman said he could usually be found, Herrin said. Beside him on a bench was a hammer, and there was blood on his shirt, Herrin said.

The woman identified Perez as the man who attacked her. He was arrested and taken to jail.
