Homeland security agents arrest man while serving warrant in Miami Beach

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A Miami Beach man was arrested Tuesday morning on a warrant by agents from Homeland Security Investigations, authorities said.

The arrest warrant was served at a home near Seventh Street and Jefferson Avenue.

A wheelchair-bound woman told Local 10 News reporter Layron Livingston that she was sleeping near a now broken window in the apartment when federal agents came in looking for her boyfriend.

Agents confirmed that a man, identified as Jose "Silk" Thomas, was taken into custody.

Authorities would not immediately release details about the warrant or charges the man faces, however the landlord at the property told Livingston that he believed the arrest was related to heroin.

A teenager who lives in the area said he heard the commotion of the raid before he headed to school.

"Glass breaking, people screaming, pushing around -- stuff like that," Fabian Ayala said.

Ayala said this is not the first time police have been called to the apartment building.

"I've seen it (before) and I've witnessed and experienced it, as well," Ayala said.

Ayala said most arrests that happen at the apartment  building are drug-related.

Miami Beach police and Miami-Dade Schools police officers assisted agents during the apprehension of the suspect.
