Juan Luis, 28, identified as man killed during altercation with barbershop owner

Luis accused of stabbing owner before owner shot him

MIAMI – Juan Luis, 28, of Hallandale Beach, was identified Wednesday by police as the man who was fatally shot last week by a barbershop owner in Allapattah.

According to an incident report, Luis entered Cooperstown Barber Shop at 2060 NW 22nd Ave. Thursday and asked a barber who he had next after the person in his chair.

Police said the barber responded, "Nobody, I got you next."

Authorities said Luis sat down for about two minutes and then attacked one of the owners of the barbershop who was sitting on a nearby couch.

According to the incident report, Luis stabbed Serban Beriguete, 45, as the victim was watching TV and then tried to run out of the business.

Police said Luis wasn't able to open the front door because it was manually controlled with a buzzer button, so Luis yelled, "Let me out or I will f****** kill you."

Authorities said Beriguete pulled out a gun and shot Luis, causing the suspect to collapse on the ground.

Beriguete's daughter previously told Local 10 News that her father was trying to protect himself and the people inside the barbershop.

"Everyone that was there all said the same thing -- this all happened so fast," Jennefer Beriguette said. "We don't even know what was the motive. Why would this happen, like, how did this turn up? We're all still trying to figure it out ourselves."

Luis and Serban Beriguete were both taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where Luis died.

No charges have been filed against Beriguete.
