Man arrested in connection with stabbing death of nuclear engineer

Edwin Rios, 24, accused of stabbing victim outside Halloween party

MIAMI – A man was arrested Thursday in connection with the fatal stabbing of a nuclear engineer in southwest Miami-Dade County, police said.

Edwin Rios, 24, faces charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. He is being held without bond.

According to an arrest report, Rios was part of a group of men who attacked two brothers as they were leaving a Halloween party early Saturday at a home on Southwest 147th Street.

Christopher Restrepo said he was stabbed in the arm as they were ambushed. His brother, Alex Restrepo, 33, was stabbed in the back and left to die.

"He saved my life because he was fighting off, I don't know how many guys, for me to be able to get away," Christopher Restrepo said.

Witnesses said the incident started as a verbal altercation inside the home and the hosts asked the people involved in the altercation to leave. Witnesses said the argument, involving about six people, escalated in the street.

Neighbors said the attack was caught on surveillance video.

The arrest report did not specify whether Rios was the person who stabbed the victims, but only stated that he was involved in the physical altercation.

A motive for the attack is unknown.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
