Man beats Hollywood gas station clerk with pipe during attempted robbery

Employee snatches pipe from attacker in incident caught on surveillance video

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Police are trying to identify a man who beat a Hollywood gas station clerk with a pipe during an attempted robbery.

The incident, which took place in October at the Shamrock gas station on Washington Street, was captured on surveillance video.

Hollywood police said the would-be robber entered the gas station and struck the employee in the back of the head.

"I thought he was a customer," Mohammed Shahada said. "When I turned my back, he just hit me in the back. It was like nothing else happened."

Police said the attacker punched the employee and hit him with the pipe numerous times, but the employee fought back and was able to take the pipe away.

"Did he say anything to you?" Local 10 News reporter Terrell Forney asked.

"No, he didn't say nothing. He just used the pipe, and I tried to save myself and that's it. He just ran away," Shahada said.

Shahada suffered a pair of gashes along his head.

Greg Shell, who was working next door, was among the first people to help Shahada.

"He was on the floor bleeding, trying to come out of the doorway," Shell said. "I brought him back inside and then I got a first aid kit and dressed his wounds."

Surveillance video showed the attacker wearing sunglasses and an Atlanta Braves baseball cap.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Hollywood police at 954-967-4411.
