Man shot, killed in breezeway of Lauderhill condominium

Victim pronounced dead at scene

LAUDERHILL, Fla. – A man was killed late Thursday night in a shooting at a Lauderhill condominium, police said.

Lauderhill police Lt. Mike Santiago said officers were called to the Wood Hue condominiums on Northwest 21st Street shortly before 11:30 p.m. after multiple residents called 911 to report hearing gunshots.

"It was close to my window," resident Lorna Jones said. "It was, 'Pow. Pow. Pow. Pow.'"

When officers arrived, they found the man lying on the ground in the breezeway near building 4221 with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Relatives and friends identified him to Local 10 News as Bernard Jones.

"I don't know what's going on," family friend Lurline Votta said. "I just know that they killed him and I know that it's not fair. That's all I know. It's sad."

"It's really sad," Lorna Jones said. "I never see this happen around here."

Residents said they heard a car's tires screeching as it drove away after the shooting.

Lorna Jones said the victim is her neighbor.

"We are not safe," she said. "You know, we just have to trust God to keep us safe."

Loved ones said Bernard Jones was in his early 30s and had three children, including a baby.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

Votta said she doesn't know why someone would want to kill Bernard Jones.

"If they're involved, maybe they should turn themselves in. Don't let the police catch them. Let's hear their side of the story," she said.

Detectives are investigating.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
