MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. - A man convicted of murdering his estranged wife in 2012 was sentenced Friday to life in prison.
Jesus Maqueira was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated stalking in the death and disappearance of Raquel Maria Calderin, 42, before her body was found.
According to detectives, Calderin had filed for divorce to end her marriage of over 20 years with Maqueira.
Maqueira went to Calderin's workplace Sept. 4, 2012, where a verbal argument ensued, and then left afterwards, detectives said.
Calderin left work at 9:30 p.m. that night, which was the last time she was seen or heard from anyone, according to police.
Maqueira's elderly father eventually helped detectives find the victim's body by telling them that he had picked up his son from a gas station at the corner of Tamiami Trial and Krome Avenue.
Police divers found Calderin's SUV in a canal nearby, and her remains inside.
Maqueira's glasses were also found inside, as well as a butcher knife believed to have been used in the killing.
