Miami-Dade police officer fatally shoots armed teen who lunged at him, police say

Officer not injured during altercation

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating after a Miami-Dade police officer was involved in a shooting that left a teenager dead Tuesday morning.

Detective Argemis Colome said the officer was working a burglary saturation detail near Kendale Lakes Drive and Southwest 65th Street when he approached the 16-year-old boy at a nearby park.

Colome said the teen ran and the officer chased after him. The foot pursuit ended in the parking lot of the Spanish Villas community.

Sometime during the incident, the officer discharged his Taser gun, Colome said.

The teen, who was armed with a knife, lunged at the officer, who then fired his gun, fatally wounding him, Colome said. The teen was pronounced dead when Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived.

Colome said the officer, who was not injured, has been with the department for slightly more than a year.

The identities of the officer and the teen haven't been released.
