MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Someone likely set fire to a home in northwest Miami-Dade County as an act of revenge, police said Thursday morning.
The flames sparked at a house along Northwest 18th Court and 18th Avenue overnight.
Livingston Hughes, who lives next door, saw flames and immediately called 911.
"It's right next to my bedroom. (I) saw the flames (and) called police," Hughes said. "I smelled it, but I did not know it was that house."
According to Miami-Dade police officers, the possible arson might have been in retaliation to a fatal shooting that occurred last week.
The shooting was reported Aug. 25 outside a home at 12530 NW 18th Court.
Police said a man driving a yellow Camaro was shot and an innocent bystander was grazed by a bullet.
The victim inside the Camaro drove himself to a shopping plaza on Northwest 127th Street and 17th Avenue and died at the scene, police said.
"We heard a lot of shots and saw a car out in the road, and then the car that we saw went down the road. We saw the man on the ground dead," a woman identified only as Carlene said.
Police said no one was home when the fire broke out Thursday. The family who lives there told investigators they feared for their lives, so they left a couple of days ago.
Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and stopped the flames from spreading.
Detectives said they will search the home for evidence.
