Sunrise police say woman was trying to take her 2 children from day care

SUNRISE, Fla. – A woman accused of threatening a day care director on Wednesday with a machete and then leading police on a chase is mentally unstable, an arrest report said.

Police said Ashley Alexandra Dailey, 25, has an active court order banning her from entering the Early Learning Center at 10092 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Sunrise, where her two children attend school.

Dailey's mother, Lenora Burney, has full custody of the children.

Police said Burney tried to stop Dailey from taking the children and the preschool director intervened, telling Dailey to leave the property.

Police said there was a struggle and Dailey struck the director with an open hand on the left arm, causing redness and a small cut.

Dailey is also accused of smashing a computer monitor at the school.

Police said Dailey left the day care without her children and got into her vehicle, where she was confronted again by the director, who said she was going to call police.

Police said Dailey pulled out a machete from her car, swung it in the air and threatened any person who came into contact with her.

Sunrise police spotted Dailey's vehicle a short time later, but she refused to stop, the report said.

Police said she struck two vehicles and tried to strike an officer with her car during the chase.

The Broward Sheriff's Office was alerted about Dailey, and deputies spotted her in Deerfield Beach.

Deputies said Dailey stopped just north of Commercial Boulevard in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, but refused to get out of her vehicle.

Deputies said they were forced to break the car window to remove her.

One deputy suffered minor cuts in the process of apprehending Dailey, authorities said.

Dailey was taken to the Broward County mail jail. She faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary with assault or battery, battery, causing property damage over $200, kidnapping, interference with custody of a minor, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer and fleeing and eluding police.
