FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man accused of a hit-and-run crash that killed an 8-year-old boy and injured his older brother is out of jail on $150,000 bond.

Zachary Benjamins, 22, walked out of jail Tuesday without answering any questions from reporters.

Last week, his attorney asked a judge to reduce his bond while he awaits trial.

Benjamins is accused of leaving the scene of the Dania Beach crash that eventually claimed the life of Apollo Brown Jr. and sent his brother, Kelv-Ron Florence, 14, to a hospital.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Benjamins tried to get his Toyota Tacoma repaired at an auto body shop, but the alert owner recognized the damaged vehicle from the news and notified deputies.

The children were struck by a Toyota Tacoma in Dania Beach in December while walking home from a basketball game.

Apollo Brown Jr. eventually died from his injuries. Florence remains at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

"He's not completely well, but he's getting better," Apollo Brown Sr. told Local 10 News.

The boys' father said Florence is currently receiving rehabilitation therapy. He's still unable to talk, but he recognizes his parents and has even smiled a time or two.

Meanwhile, Apollo Brown Sr. questioned the judge's decision to release Benjamins.

"You ran because you hit the kids," he said. "Who's to say you're not going to run now?"

Benjamins is wearing an ankle monitoring device.
