Broward County schools to keep students indoors during solar eclipse

Miami-Dade to let schools decide whether to let students outside

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward County public school students will be kept indoors during next week's eclipse.

The release reiterated how dangerous it is to look at the sun without proper precautions being taken.

All outdoor activities at all Broward district public schools between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m will be moved indoors, including:

  • Recesses
  • Athletic practices
  • Band practices
  • Aftercare programs

Broward County schools are asking parents to speak with their children about the dangers of looking directly at the sun and the potential eye damage that can occur.

The school system is also worried about distracted drivers.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools offered up similar rules and has also canceled outdoor activities during the time of the eclipse, but will allow individual schools to make their own decisions about allowing students outside.

Students at Catholic schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties will be released from school at 11:30 a.m. to view the eclipse at home.

Outdoor activities at all schools will resume after 4:30 p.m.
