Driver dies after car crashes into gas pump, catches fire in Dania Beach

18-year-old man killed in fiery crash at BP gas station

DANIA BEACH, Fla. ā€“ An 18-year-old driver died Tuesday night after a car crashed into a gas pump and caught fire Tuesday night in Dania Beach.Ā 

The Ford Mustang struck a gas pump shortly before 9:30 p.m. at the BP gas station in the 700 block of South Federal Highway.

Broward Sheriff''s Office deputies said the Mustang was speeding west in the eastbound lanes of Southeast Seventh Street when the driver lost control and slammed into the fuel pump.Ā 

The car caught fire immediately after the crash, and the driver was trapped inside.

Relatives identified the victim as Ricardo Villeda. They said he had just moved to South Florida from Arizona to be closer to his parents in Honduras and had recently gotten the car out of a repair shop.

"Every time he gets a temper, he always goes really fast in his car," cousin Jessica Sanders said.

Cellphone video showed the aftermath of the fiery crash.

Bystanders tried to help Villeda out of the car, but the flames were too intense.

The cause of the crash and fire are under investigation.
