FIU, city of Sweetwater break ground on pedestrian bridge over SW 8th Street

SWEETWATER, Fla. – Florida International University and the city of Sweetwater celebrated the start of construction Tuesday for a pedestrian bridge that will connect Sweetwater with the northern entrance of FIU's Modesto Maidique campus.

MCM and FIGG Bridge Engineers are designing and building the bridge that is part of the UniversityCity Prosperity Project.

The project also includes improvements to the entrances of FIU's main campus and to the 109th Avenue plaza area in Sweetwater, smart parking and transportation system software and community transit.

FIU spokeswoman Dianne Fernandez said the project is being made possible by the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Program (TIGER) grant that allows FIU and its partners to move forward with UniversityCity.

FIU's partners in the project include the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, the Florida Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Transportation, Miami-Dade County, the City of Sweetwater, IBM and the engineering firm T.Y. Lin International.
