CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The city of Coral Springs is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
The Coral Springs Community Chest produced the musical celebration of the city, titled "Once Upon a Dream."
"Every single segment in going to be unique and entertaining and informative and fun, really fun for all ages," said show producer Caryl Fantel.
Students from Coral Springs Charter, Coral Springs, Coral Glades, J.P. Taravella, and Stoneman Douglas will be part of the performance at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts.
"I never really realized all the history that Coral Springs had about coming over on a bridge and riding your horse to high school and things like that, so that was really interested," said Kaitlin Alexander.
Alexander and the rest of the Coral Springs High School choir will be dressed in tie-dye t-shirts and used 60s music to tell of the early days of the city when developers tried luring home buyers from Fort Lauderdale.
"I didn't have any idea that Coral Springs was so old," said Carmen Lino. "I had no idea. I never knew that Wiles Road was the first road."
Students at J.P. Taravella High School are singing the names of the city's 50 plus subdivisions.
By the 1980s, years before these students were born, families did move west.
"I didn't realize how many creeks and isles and glens we have for neighborhoods," said Ross Granick.
Coral Springs has a history of unique anniversary celebrations. In 1988 for its 25th, the city set a Guiness Book of World Records for the largest hamburger.
The money raised from the performance goes to the Coral Springs Community Chest, which supports non-profits in the city.
The performance is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $10.
