Police-involved shooting leaves 1 dead in Hollywood

Driver says gunman killed by police shot at his car

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A police-involved shooting left a man dead Sunday afternoon in Hollywood.

His body was on the side of the road along 67th Avenue, between Scott Street and Park Street. Resident David Cordova said he heard at least four gunshots.

A few blocks away at Liberty Street and 70th Terrace, Hollywood police officers surrounded a white van with a bullet hole near the passenger-side headlight.

Officers first responded to a shooting along the 7000 blick of Liberty Street. Surveillance video shows a man shooting at a white van passing by, then running away. The driver said he didn't know who the shooter was or why he fired two shots at his van. He's just thankful he wasn't hurt.

Neighbor Nia Brown heard the gunshots go off in front of her home, with one shell casing landing just a few feet away from her mail box.

"I'm scared because it happened right there," she said. "It could have went through our window."

The driver of the van said, before the man was killed, he shot at his car in Hollywood's Driftwood neighborhood. He called 911 to give them a description of the shooter.

Police searched the area and found a man who matched the description, Officer Christian Lata said. The shooting happened after officers reported attempting to make contact with him. Lata said the man was in possession of a gun.
