Carjacking leads to police-involved shooting

Miami-Dade Police Department: No officers injured

MIAMI – A carjacking led to a police-involved shooting in northwest Miami-Dade County on Thursday morning.

About 5:10 a.m., three people carjacked a Honda Accord at Northwest 42nd Street and 22nd Avenue, said Miami-Dade police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta. About 10 minutes later, an officer in a marked unit saw the Accord at Northwest 79th Street and 6th Court.

"Once the officer approached the vehicle, shots were fired," said Zabaleta. "One of the subjects -- there were three subjects in the vehicle -- one of them was struck by the officer. He remained on the scene as the other two fled in the vehicle."

That man was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was in stable condition.

Michael David Trout said he was panhandling at the corner when the shooting happened. He said a passenger got out of the Accord and fired at the officer, who shot back.

"Then shot him in the leg and shot him in the head," said Trout. "He shoot right at the police."

The other two carjackers got out of the car about four blocks south of where the shooting happened and ran away. The car had a shattered back window and at least four bullet holes in it.

Police closed Northwest 79th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues as they investigated.

"There's very detailed procedures that go along with this thing," said Zabaleta. "The state attorney is involved. You got crime scenes that are involved. We have attorneys that represent the officers that are involved. The subjects need to get medical attention, so all of these factors prolong the entire investigation, making it a little difficult to have answers now."

Anyone with information on the carjacking and shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
