MIAMI-DADE, Fla. - Miami-Dade Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat, who was born in Cuba, died Saturday after a battle with cancer.
Commissioner Rebeca Sosa described Rodriguez-Chomat as an "incredible public servant who dedicated his life to our community."
David Young, a former colleague, described him as a "wonderful man."
Local 10 News viewers may remember Rodriguez-Chomat for trying to teach a lesson to Penelope Soto, a teenager facing a charge of possession of Xanax. The video of the drama in court went viral about four years ago.
"Adios," she said.
Rodriguez-Chomat doubled her bond during a hearing. And when she showed him her middle finger, he punished her for contempt of court with30 more days in jail. He later reversed his decision and gave her another chance.
Susana Ferro Rodriguez-Chomat, his wife, his children Rodolfo and Irene survive him.
