Florida paratrooper died of self-inflicted gunshot wound, Army says

Spc. Carlton Butler was found dead last month inside his barracks

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ā€“ A North Miami Beach paratrooper who was found dead last month inside his barracks at Fort Bragg died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Army said Monday.

The Army said Spc. Carlton Butler, 22, diedĀ on Nov 25, but didn't initially disclose the cause of death.

The Army transported Butler's remains fromĀ North Carolina to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Monday. The Army held a short ceremony with Butler's familyĀ on the tarmac after his flag-draped coffin was removed from airplane.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Northwest Baptist Church in Miami-Dade County.

Butler grew up in North Miami Beach and joined the Army in 2014.

HeĀ was assigned to Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

"Carlton was a patriotic, energetic, and motivated young man, who --Ā just recently --Ā had been promoted up to a Gun Team Leader position in Bravo Company, a position he rightly earned,"Ā Lt.Ā Col.Ā GrahamĀ White, Butler's commanding officer, wrote in aĀ Facebook post.
