BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – An 81-year-old woman was pulling into a parking space at a South Florida bank when she stepped on the gas pedal and slammed her car into a man and his mother, who were standing at an ATM, police said.

Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said the Toyota Camry went over the concrete parking stop and struck Diane Power, 63, pinning her against the wall.

Slater said her son, Thomas Power, 32, tried to run into an adjacent flower bed but was pinned underneath the car after it bounced off the wall of the bank.

The driver, identified as Louise Szakacs, was finally able to stop the car after it traveled back into the parking lot.

Both victims were taken to Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach with critical injuries. Slater said one of Diane Power's legs had to be amputated.

Szakacs was taken to JFK Medical Center as a precaution.

Slater said investigators haven't determined if the driver failed to brake or confused the gas pedal for the brake pedal. She said Szakacs was cited for careless driving.
