Police identify man killed in hit-and-run

Victim identified as 75-year-old Lefevre Charles

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – North Miami police identified the man killed in a hit-and-run crash on Monday evening.

A driver hit and killed 75-year-old Lefevre Charles at North Miami Avenue and 123rd Road about 6:55 p.m., police say. The driver then left the scene.

"He's a good person. I mean, I don't know who would do this to him but he don't deserve it" said Andy Davis. "That's crazy. That's ridiculous. That's straight up ridiculous."

Davis said Charles was likely getting off the bus when he was hit.

"That's somebody's life, somebody's father, somebody's brother, uncle, it's somebody's family," said Ivan Lorenzo. "You got to have sympathy."

"He was an old man, you know what I mean, an old man," said Davis. You should have just stopped to see what was going on."

"I'm not surprised because people cross the street, I mean, people cross the street without the light. At the light, they don't cross, they just cross right here, and people just drive real fast. They don't slow down or nothing for anybody," said Jessica Perez, who lives on North Miami Avenue.

Police believe the vehicle has front-end damage. The make and model of the vehicle wasn't immediately released.

"We're still looking for the car that was involved in this," said North Miami police major Neal Cuevas.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the North Miami Police Department at 305-891-0294.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, officers statewide investigated nearly 77,000 hit-and-run crashes last year. Officials say those crashes injured 17,000 people and killed 168.
