MIAMI – The 15-year-old Homestead student who police say accidentally shot and killed another teen on a school bus must wear an ankle monitor upon his release from jail, a judge ruled Thursday.
Jordyn Howe, who is charged with manslaughter and carrying a concealed firearm, waived his right to appear in court. He must also surrender his passport.
"He's going to be placed on home detention with electronic monitor," said Judge Richard Hersh.
Police say Howe was showing the gun to another student on a privately chartered bus on the way to school on November 20 when it accidentally went off.
A bullet hit 13-year-old Lourdes Guzman, who was riding on the bus with her younger sister. She was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital, where she later died.
Ady DeJesus, Guzman's mother, attended the hearing on Thursday.
"It's not easy. I'm just trying to cope day by day," said DeJesus. "It's getting my family upset. I just want this to finish, that's all."
The judge didn't rule whether Howe will be tried as an adult or a juvenile. That hearing was reset to Jan. 23.
