THE ACREAGE, Fla. – Three tornadoes touched down in South Florida on Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Preliminary findings by the National Weather Service found a EF-1 tornado with estimated winds at 100 mph touched down for about one minute in The Acreage.
The tornado ripped the roof off of a home at North 79th Court and 130th Avenue. Wesley Rivera, who lives there, told Local 10 they were watching television about 7:30 a.m. when it hit.
"We got up, ran into the bathroom, closed the door, and rode it out," said Rivera. "We heard a loud noise and windows popping, and once it was over with, it wasn't even ten seconds walked out and yup, there was a tornado."
Several vehicles nearby were also damaged. The tornado carved a two-mile path. Parts of Broward County and Miami-Dade County were under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. Thursday.
"All of a sudden, you heard some thunder and it never stopped, and that whole thing on TV that it's like a train is coming," said Richard Caruso.
"What we've seen is trees in one part of the block are blown in one direction and you walk down a few feet and you debris blown in another direction," said Robert Molleda with the National Weather Service. "That's usually an indication that you have a rotating winds blowing through an area."
Several homes near Tangerine Drive and 130th Avenue had heavy roof damage, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.
An EF-0 tornado touched down in Belle Glade about 3:20 a.m. and caused minor damage to trees in power lines.
Another tornado touched down in the Everglades just east of U.S. 27 about six miles north of Alligator Alley about 8:10 a.m.
