MIAMI ā Two former Miami Heat stars participated in a Jeopardy-style contest with students from South Florida high schools as part of Black History Month.
"It's a great opportunity for the kids to come see their heroes play and also put their academic skills to work," said Heat reporter Jason Jackson.
Alonzo Mourning captained the team from South Dade High School. Tim Hardaway led the team from Miramar High School.
The students immersed themselves in black history to prepare.
"I learned a lot that I didn't know," said one student.
"We thought we were confident but then we came here and realized how much we didn't know, but it was a pleasure to learn and understand so much," said another student.
"Our history is very broad and we need to study it and understand it each and every day," said Chitira Gotluru.
"I always believed that if you learn about history, you don't repeat the same mistakes in the future and that's important for them to know about black history," said Alicia Hidalgo, the principal of South Dade High School.
The schools battled for bragging rights and $4,000 for school supplies.
South Dade won 710 to 290.
"That's very embarrassing. It's good for the kids, good for myself because it's never too late to learn more about your history," said Hardaway.
The event was part of the Heat's ongoing celebration of Black History Month.
