Homeowner shoots, kills teen burglar at northwest Miami-Dade home

17-year-old dies at Jackson Memorial Hospital

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A woman shot and killed an intruder in her northwest Miami-Dade County home Thursday night, police said.

Miami-Dade police said the homeowner, Gwendolyn Jennette, 54, left her house about 5:30 p.m. She returned home after her burglar alarm went off, but when she got there she was met by an intruder.

The woman saw a man leaving the house through the rear door, Detective Daniel Ferrin said. At that point, there was some type of altercation and shots were fired, Ferrin said.

It is unclear if the intruder had a weapon, but Ferrin said the owner was armed.

The 17-year-old suspect was "shot by the homeowner," Ferrin said.

Officers arrived moments later, but it was too late. The teenager was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Police later identified the teen killed as Trevon Johnson.

The homeowner was being questioned about the shooting. Ultimately, the state attorney's office will decide if she faces charges.

"If there's any type of situation where you believe you're being robbed or there's a burglary of any sort and you have an opportunity to avoid the situation and let the police handle it," Ferrin said. "We're trained for these type of situations, and this is what we're here for."
