Hoverboard catches fire at home in Weston

Photos show hoverboard with charger next to it

WESTON, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office firefighters were called to a home in Weston Thursday afternoon after a hoverboard caught fire.

BSO Department of Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said the fire happened at a home in the 100 block of Lakeview Drive.

Photos taken from the scene show a scorched hoverboard with its charger lying next to it.

"A 12-year-old was riding the hoverboard, the battery died and he went to plug it in. He said about an hour had elapsed and it just exploded," Jachles said.

Anjum Khurshid called 911 after hearing the screams and smelling the smoke, while Syed Rizvi went to help the kids unplug the device.

They said the children were home with their grandmother when the hoverboard caught fire.

"It's not burning, it's melting, and a lot of fumes while it was melting," Rizvi said.

Explosions and fires caused by hoverboards are becoming more common.

The family said they bought the hoverboard online about two years ago, and it was delivered in a package from China.

"This should serve as a reminder that if you have anything that is battery powered (or) anything that charges, no matter what it is, unless it automatically shuts off, disconnect those charges (and) don't charge hot batteries either," Jachles said.

No one was injured, but the incident caused about $1,000 worth of damage to the home.

"This toy should be out of the market. That I would say," Khurshid said. "I would recommend every parent out there to take this toy from their kids."
