NYE revelers crowd Elbo Room in Fort Lauderdale Beach

FORT LAUDERDALE BEACH, Fla. – The coronavirus pandemic didn’t dissuade New Year’s Eve revelers from crowding at the Elbo Room, a popular bar that set up a mini midnight Ball Drop in Fort Lauderdale Beach.

There weren’t any police officers or code enforcement officers in the area to encourage social distancing. Face masks were also not enforced.

Fort Lauderdale held a virtual celebration with live music and a small fireworks display near City Hall. Some Broward residents were also able to see a light display at The Guitar Hotel in Hollywood.

Broward County officials estimated 940,000 tourists visited the area during the last weeks of December.
