Coronavirus: Florida reports 31,518 new cases Saturday, 217 resident deaths

Latest numbers include reported cases from past 48 hours

Florida health officials reported 31,518 new coronavirus cases on Saturday and 217 more deaths.

The higher numbers reflect two days of data as the state did not release a report on Jan. 1.

Florida has now confirmed 1,354,833 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 21,890 resident deaths, according to the health department. Non-resident deaths are now at 320.

Miami-Dade County has now surpassed 300,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 304,187 as of Saturday’s reporting.

There have been at least 63,148 hospitalizations attributed to the novel coronavirus in Florida since the start of the outbreak.

The statewide positivity rate on Saturday was 10.09%.

Deaths reported Saturday include 51 in Miami-Dade County, 15 in Broward County and 13 in Palm Beach County.

The focus of attention, although with the spotlight still squarely shining on coronavirus cases, has shifted to the vaccine in Florida. In Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach a new phase in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout began in South Florida with long lines waiting for those meeting eligibility requirements. Systems were overloaded with requests. Broward Health, reported it couldn’t take any new appointments until February since they had reached capacity.

PALM BEACH

Cases: 84,972 (+2,082)

Deaths: 1,908 (+13)

Yesterday’s positivity: 9.90%

Latest totals

Worldwide, the number of COVID-19 cases reported is more than 84.2 million. There have been more than 1.8 million deaths worldwide attributed to the pandemic, according to data compiled from various sources by Johns Hopkins University.

The United States has reported 20.1 million confirmed cases and has had more than 348,000 deaths from COVID-19, the highest totals in the world.
