MIAMI – An elderly man has been taken into custody after barricading himself inside a Miami-Dade County home with a gun.
Miami police asked the public to stay away from the area of Northwest Fifth Avenue and 49th Street Monday afternoon.
That’s where officers responded to a call about a barricaded subject in the area.
Sky 10 was above the scene around 1:45 p.m. as multiple police officers were parked in the area.
There were also SWAT and fire rescue vehicles observed at the scene.
Police said that an 80-year-old man was barricaded inside a home and he has since been taken into custody using “less than lethal force.”
According to authorities, that man pointed a gun at a caretaker who owns the property they are on. They said the dispute started over whether the man was going to be taken to a nursing home-type facility.
The man is believed to be having some kind of mental crisis, police said. They added that the man is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Police officers evacuated a nearby assisted living facility as a precaution.
