Drug sting ends up in gunfire between police, suspect near Bass Pro Shops in Dania Beach

Plantation police officer working with BSO, suspect face non life-threatening injuries, officials say

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A drug investigation led to an exchange of gunfire between a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy and one of two suspects in the parking lot of a Bass Pro Shops in Dania Beach Friday.

According to an official from the Drug Enforcement Agency, an arrest operation between DEA and Broward Sheriff’s Office after a cocaine investigation led to the shooting.

The DEA spokesperson said that the deputy was a Plantation Police officer assigned to BSO’s Drug Task Force.

Around 1:05 p.m. as the arrest was underway, a suspect fired at a BSO deputy and the deputy fired back. Both the officer and one of the two suspects were shot, said the spokesperson.

Sky 10 was above the area of 200 Gulfstream Way shortly before 1:30 p.m. as deputies blocked off a portion of the parking lot.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael B. Kane said the alleged suspect was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital. The officer was also transported to a hospital. Both have non life-threatening injuries, according to reports.

Authorities said both of the suspects who were arrested will be facing federal drug charges.
