According to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Linhardt, deputies were called to the 101000 block of the Overseas Highway and arrived to find Crichton and a 39-year-old man yelling at each other.

Linhardt said both of them ran off into nearby woods when they saw deputies arriving, but they were both quickly detained.

But while the man followed the deputies’ commands, Crichton did not, Linhardt said.

“Crichton refused commands, was physically and verbally combative, pulled away from Deputies numerous times, tensed her body, kicked at Deputies and at one point bit Deputy Casey Matthew’s hand while he was trying to handcuff her,” Linhardt said in an email. “She also spit in his eye.”

Authorities said Crichton also intentionally broke a $200 hobble restraint device.

According to Linhardt, Crichton also had active warrants out of Monroe County for battery, leaving the scene of a crash and DUI.

The deputy was taken to Mariners Hospital for treatment to his hand.
